Where to Start

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Within the three expressions of our church there are many ways to serve. There are a great variety of ways to serve in professional ministry, as a rostered minister (pastor or deacon), or other ministry professional.

  • The ELCA offers resources for all ages to explore and discern their call to ministry. Learn more at ELCA.org.

  • People interested in rostered ministry go through a candidacy process. The details around this process can be found in the the Resources library.

  • Synod Authorized Ministry (SAM) is intended to assist our congregations and respond pastorally and effectively to opportunities in Christ’s mission where it is not possible to provide a minister of Word and Sacrament. By equipping lay members of congregations as Synod Authorized Ministers (SAMs), those people are empowered to preach the Word of God and administer the sacraments, both Holy Communion and Holy Baptism.

  • Congregations with openings for people to serve in some ministry capacity are invited to share a brief position announcement for posting on this site.
