Pulpit Supply

When a Rostered Minister takes vacation, or has the need to be away for an extended period of time (such as during a sabbatical), congregations may seek Pulpit Supply for preaching and presiding at weekend worship. In special circumstances, Pulpit Supply ministers may be asked to serve for an extended period of time among Congregations in Transition.

If Pulpit Supply is not available, congregations may gather for a Service of the Word (that is, a service without Holy Communion), and may even ask neighboring congregations for a recording of a sermon if a layperson is unable to offer a message.

Please note that pastors can preach and preside at Holy Communion, but deacons can only preach and are not authorized to preside at Holy Communion.

  • When partnering with a Pulpit Supply Minister, congregations should expect to pay no less than $200 for preaching and presiding at one worship service and no less than $50 for each additional service, and the congregation pays at least $60 for each class that is taught. The congregation pays travel costs at the current IRS rate per mile and provides overnight lodging and/or meals as necessary. (These guidelines are from the Compensation Guidelines which are revised by the Annual Synod Assembly.)
