Update about Lutheran Service in Iowa - Residential Services at Bremwood Campus

Dear Ones,

Lutheran congregations and individuals in Southeastern Iowa have been partners in ministry with the Bremwood campus and Lutheran Services in Iowa. Untold numbers of youth from across the state have been blessed with a variety of ministries throughout its history. I am grateful for the financial gifts, in-kind donations, and prayers that have sustained these ministries over time. Thank you.

Over the past several years, Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) has experienced significant changes that directly impact their ability to serve residential clients. Difficulties in recruiting and retaining qualified staff (60%+ turnover rate), combined with increasing acuity levels of youth have resulted in a lower number of residents and more frequent need for local law enforcement resources. Already low reimbursement rates for fewer residents means that Bremwood has operated at a loss for the past four years and projects the same for the foreseeable future.

After several discussions and careful deliberations with Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS), and in recognizing there are other providers more fully equipped to provide the high level of care required for these youth, LSI has determined that they will transition out of residential services.  LSI is working with HHS and other partners to ensure a smooth and collaborative transition for each of the young women in their care. They are working with staff impacted by this decision to identify job opportunities within LSI or assist them in finding other employment.  In the coming months, LSI will be evaluating potential uses for the Bremwood Campus.

As a member of the LSI Board of Directors, it has been heartbreaking to know the great need in our state and realize that LSI is not able to provide the necessary level of care to Bremwood residents without jeopardizing the well-being of residents, staff, and the wider community. This decision will allow LSI to fully focus on and elevate its core services including early childhood education, disabilities services, adoption and foster care, mental health programs, and immigrant and refugee services.

Aware of the long-term investment and love the people of Southeastern Iowa have poured into the ministries of Bremwood, I grieve this transition while I believe it is necessary. I invite you to join me in praying for all of those directly impacted by this change as well as those who are working through the details.

Again, thank you for all you have done to support Bremwood and LSI over the years. I look forward to whatever new ways the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us in service to our neighbors in need.

Peace in Christ,

Bishop Amy Current
