Throughout the season of Lent (and March Madness), St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale, Iowa was filled with paper chicks–colored cardinal and gold, black and gold, and a few others!– as part of ELCA’s World Hunger project. For each of the 419 paper chicks purchased by members and friends, a family living in poverty around the world receives the real thing. Soon, those chicks will begin to produce eggs for nutritious, protein-rich meals, and be sold at the marketplace for income – helping a family escape hunger for good. “People of all ages got involved in the effort,” says Pastor Dan Kuckuck. “It’s such important work, and this was an easy way to make a big impact.
