IOWA CITY, IA – The Rev. Michael Burk, 59, was re-elected May 31, to a second six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) on the fourth ecclesiastical ballot at the synod assembly, May 30-June 1, at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, Coralville, IA.
There were 380 votes cast with 228 votes needed for election. Bishop Burk was re-elected with 254 votes to 75 votes for the Rev. Virginia Anderson-Larson, and 51 votes for the Rev. Kathy Gerking.
Burk was elected to his first six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Iowa Synod in May 2008. From 2001 until his election in 2008, Bishop Burk served as the ELCA executive for worship and liturgical resources. He also served Zion Lutheran Church, Dysart, IA and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School, Waverly, IA.
Ordained in 1987, Burk is a graduate of Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. He completed his undergraduate work at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA.
